Straw Tower
Each team attempts to build the strongest straw tower. Teams will construct a tower using 50 drinking straws and 20 straight pins (or a length of masking tape). Team of 2.
THE COMPETITION1. The tower must be constructed in 10 minutes using only the drinking straws and length of tape masking tape. The straws can be interconnected directly or through the use of tape; however, no other forms of fastening devices may be used. Straws may be cut or slit, if desired, and they may be bent in any manner desired.
2. The height of the tower will be measured before the loading process begins. To qualify the tower must be at least 30 cm high at the loading point. 3. The top of the tower must accommodate a loading block that is 5 cm x 5 cm. The student must be able to balance the block (horizontally) on the tower at the loading point for tower to qualify. |
SCORINGScoring will be based on the following: Height in centimeters times 2. A tower that holds the block will be ranked higher than a tower of the same height that does not hold the block. Tie-Breaker will be the tallest tower that holds the most number of blocks.
